When respirators are required to protect employees, OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 requires a written respiratory-protection program that addresses selection, medical evaluation, fit testing, training, use, inspection, and maintenance. Air-purifying respirators must not be used in oxygen-deficient or IDLH atmospheres unless specifically permitted by the applicable respiratory-protection program and approval.
