Gas detector configurations are not interchangeable. A monitor equipped for hydrogen sulfide must not be assumed to detect oxygen deficiency, carbon monoxide, combustible gas, or other contaminants. Select and configure monitoring equipment for the specific gases and concentrations identified by the workplace hazard assessment.
Gas monitors must be used, bump tested, calibrated, maintained, and stored according to the manufacturer's instructions and the employer's written safety procedures. A portable detector does not make an unknown atmosphere safe and does not replace required ventilation, entry controls, respiratory protection, rescue planning, or other controls. Treat an alarm, failed test, damaged instrument, or unknown reading according to the workplace emergency procedure.
