Common Uses & Applications
For assessed hazards in manufacturing, industrial maintenance, construction, utilities and oil and gas operations. Sanding and grinding require appropriate particulate filters; chemical handling and coating tasks require selection for the specific gases, vapors and particles present. Full-face coverage does not make every cartridge suitable for every task.
Cartridge Selection and Compatibility
Use only the MSA components listed in the applicable NIOSH approval. The facepiece alone provides no contaminant filtration. Particulate filters do not provide general gas/vapor protection, and another brand’s cartridges must not be substituted. Review the chemical SDS, exposure assessment and MSA selection guidance before use.
OSHA Requirements and Fit Testing
Required use must follow OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134, including a written program, medical evaluation, training and fit testing. An assigned protection factor of 50 for a negative-pressure full-face respirator requires quantitative fit testing and an effective respiratory protection program. Qualitative fit testing limits use to exposures no greater than 10 times the permissible exposure limit.
Perform a seal check every time the mask is donned. Facial hair, eyewear or other equipment must not interfere with the seal. Do not use in oxygen-deficient, unknown or immediately dangerous to life or health atmospheres. Follow any stricter substance-specific requirements.
Inspection and Service Life
Inspect the lens, seal, valves, harness and connections before use. Clean and maintain the facepiece according to MSA instructions. Gas/vapor cartridges require an appropriate approved end-of-service-life indicator or a change schedule based on objective information; smell alone is not a replacement schedule.
