Common Uses & Applications
For assessed hazards in manufacturing, chemical handling, industrial maintenance, utilities and construction. Sanding and grinding require suitable particulate filters. Painting, coating and other chemical tasks require cartridges matched to the contaminants and concentrations. Full-face coverage does not establish protection against every chemical or eye hazard.
Filter and Cartridge Selection
Use the North N-Series components listed in the applicable NIOSH-approved assembly. The facepiece alone provides no contaminant filtration. Review the chemical SDS, exposure assessment and cartridge limitations before selection. Do not substitute another brand’s filters or assume particulate filters also remove gases and vapors.
OSHA Requirements and Fit Testing
Required use must follow OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134, including a written program, medical evaluation, training and fit testing. An assigned protection factor of 50 in negative-pressure full-face use requires quantitative fit testing and an effective respiratory protection program. Qualitative fit testing limits use to exposures no greater than 10 times the permissible exposure limit.
Perform a user seal check each time the mask is donned. Facial hair, eyeglass temples and other equipment must not interfere with the seal. Do not use the air-purifying configuration in oxygen-deficient, unknown or immediately dangerous to life or health atmospheres. Follow stricter substance-specific requirements where applicable.
Inspection and Replacement Planning
Inspect the lens, seal, valves, harness and connections before use. Clean and maintain according to manufacturer instructions. Gas/vapor cartridges require an appropriate approved end-of-service-life indicator or a change schedule based on objective information. Odor alone is not a replacement schedule.
