Welding, construction, utilities and manufacturing operations require selection based on the actual contaminants and concentrations. A workplace description alone does not establish suitability, especially where gases accompany airborne particles.
P100 Filtration and Acid Gas Limitations
The NIOSH filter classification guide identifies P100 filters as at least 99.97% efficient against airborne particles under test conditions and strongly resistant to oil aerosols. Filter efficiency is not a guarantee of wearer protection; correct fit and an approved assembly remain essential.
MSA limits nuisance relief to concentrations not exceeding the OSHA permissible exposure limit or applicable government limit, whichever is lower. The 818344 is not NIOSH approved for acid gas or hydrogen fluoride protection. Select an approved gas cartridge or other suitable respiratory system when that protection is required. These filters do not supply oxygen and are not for oxygen-deficient or IDLH atmospheres.
Selection and Workplace Requirements
Verify the exact facepiece/filter combination using MSA instructions and the respirator approval label. Do not assume compatibility with every Advantage model or another brand. For required workplace use, OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 requires an appropriate respiratory protection program, including medical evaluation, fit testing for tight-fitting facepieces, training and maintenance. Perform a user seal check whenever the respirator is donned.

How does 818344 differ from 818342 and 818343?
The 818342 provides plain P100 filtration. The 818343 adds nuisance organic vapor and ozone relief; 818344 adds nuisance acid gas and hydrogen fluoride relief.
Does this filter replace an acid gas cartridge?
No. Nuisance relief does not establish approved gas protection, even when the product name includes “acid gas.”
Can I use these for lead or asbestos work?
P100 filtration alone does not determine suitability. The employer must select the complete respirator under the applicable exposure-specific requirements and respiratory protection program.
