Welding can generate gases as well as particles; these filters are not a complete solution for every welding operation.
What P100 Filtration Means
The NIOSH filter classification guide identifies P100 as at least 99.97% particulate filtration under test conditions, with strong resistance to oil aerosols. This percentage describes filter performance, not the protection every wearer receives. Facepiece fit, correct assembly and workplace conditions remain essential.
Nuisance Relief Is Not Gas Cartridge Protection
MSA defines nuisance concentrations as not exceeding the OSHA permissible exposure limit or applicable government limit, whichever is lower. The 818343 is not NIOSH approved for organic vapor or ozone protection. Where gas or vapor protection is required, select an approved respirator and cartridge for that exposure. These filters do not supply oxygen and must not be used in oxygen-deficient or IDLH atmospheres.
Respiratory Protection Requirements
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 requires an appropriate respiratory protection program for required workplace use, including medical evaluation, fit testing for tight-fitting facepieces, training and maintenance. Perform a user seal check each time the respirator is donned. Follow MSA instructions and workplace procedures for inspection and replacement; do not assume one replacement schedule suits every task.
