Choosing Disposable Respirators and Face Masks

Disposable respirators and face masks are not interchangeable. Select the product type and verified standard that match the workplace hazard, exposure conditions, required level of protection, and respiratory-protection program.

NIOSH Approved Disposable RespiratorsFiltering facepiece respirators form a seal around the nose and mouth and filter particles according to their N-, R-, or P-series approval. They do not protect against gases or vapors.
Disposable Face and Surgical MasksGeneral-use and ASTM-rated masks may provide source control or fluid-barrier performance according to their verified specifications, but loose-fitting masks are not substitutes for required respirators.

When respirators are required for employees, OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 requires an appropriate respiratory-protection program, medical evaluation, training, and fit testing for tight-fitting respirators. Verify NIOSH approval markings and the product’s official approval listing before workplace use.
