NRR, Fit Testing and Actual Protection
NRR 25 is a laboratory rating, not a guaranteed 25 dB reduction for every wearer. Fit, insertion technique and consistent wear affect the protection received. Do not simply subtract 25 from a workplace noise reading to determine a safe exposure.
3M lists UltraFit as compatible with its E-A-Rfit Validation System; testing requires the appropriate test equipment and probed test plugs. NIOSH recommends individual quantitative hearing-protector fit testing to assess worker-specific attenuation.
OSHA Hearing Conservation
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.95 addresses occupational noise exposure in general industry, including hearing-conservation programs, protector selection and training. Cleaning and Reuse
Clean with soap and water according to 3M’s instructions, allow the plugs to dry and store them in a clean location. Inspect before reuse and replace damaged plugs or those that cannot be cleaned.
