NIOSH-Approved Cartridges for Certain Organic Vapors

3M 6001 organic vapor cartridges attach to compatible 3M bayonet-style reusable respirators and help provide respiratory protection against certain organic vapors. The swept-back profile helps preserve the wearer's field of view and balance while the quarter-turn connection allows the cartridges to be installed and removed quickly.

This listing includes one pair, or two cartridges. Model 6001 is a gas and vapor cartridge for workplace and occupational use. It does not provide particulate filtration by itself, and it must be used as part of a complete NIOSH-approved respirator configuration selected for the identified contaminant and exposure level.

Cartridge Change Schedule

Organic vapor cartridges have a limited service life that changes with the contaminant, concentration, humidity, temperature, work rate, and use conditions. OSHA requires employers to implement an objective cartridge change schedule based on service-life information or other reliable data. Do not use odor, taste, or irritation as the normal replacement method. Leave the contaminated area immediately if breakthrough or distress is suspected.

Important Limitations

Do not use model 6001 in oxygen-deficient atmospheres, environments that are immediately dangerous to life or health, or locations where the contaminant or concentration is unknown. The 6001 cartridge does not filter hazardous particulates on its own. Where both organic vapors and particulates are present, use only an approved combination identified by 3M and the NIOSH approval label.

Pack and Identifier Check

This listing is for one pair. 3M's manufacturer case configuration contains 60 cartridges, or 30 pairs. 3M identifies the 6001 cartridge under 3M ID 7000051851. The case-level UPC must not be assigned to an individual pair unless the retail packaging carries that exact identifier.

3M 6001 Organic Vapor Cartridge FAQ

How many cartridges are included?

This listing includes one pair, which is two 3M 6001 cartridges for a compatible dual-cartridge respirator.

What does the 3M 6001 cartridge protect against?

Model 6001 is NIOSH approved for protection against certain organic vapors when used in an approved complete respirator configuration. The exact hazard and concentration must be evaluated before selection.

Does the 3M 6001 filter dust, mist, or other particulates?

No. The 6001 is an organic vapor cartridge and does not provide particulate filtration when used alone. Use only a 3M and NIOSH-approved filter and retainer combination when particulate protection is also required.

Which respirators accept 3M 6001 cartridges?

3M lists specified 6000, 6500, 7500, 7800S, and FF-400 Series reusable facepieces, along with certain 3M Scott AV-3000 configurations. Confirm the exact facepiece and cartridge combination on the current NIOSH approval label before use.

How often should 3M 6001 cartridges be replaced?

Replacement timing must follow the employer's objective cartridge change schedule. Service life depends on the contaminant, concentration, humidity, temperature, breathing rate, and other conditions of use.

Can odor or taste be used to decide when to replace the cartridges?

No. Odor, taste, or irritation should not replace a documented change schedule. If breakthrough or distress is suspected, leave the contaminated area immediately and follow the respiratory protection program.

Can these cartridges be used in an IDLH or oxygen-deficient atmosphere?

No. Do not use 3M 6001 cartridges in atmospheres that are immediately dangerous to life or health, oxygen deficient, or unknown.

What is the difference between 3M 6001 and 3M 60921?

The 6001 provides organic vapor protection only. The 60921 combines organic vapor protection with a P100 particulate filter. Select the exact approved configuration required by the workplace hazard assessment.
