Uvex Horizon S212 Shade 3 Flip-Up Safety Glasses
***This item is discontinued*** Uvex Horizon S212 safety glasses combine a Shade 3 flip-up filter with a clear impact-resistant polycarbonate lens beneath it. The design lets industrial workers raise the shaded lens for inspection after a task requiring the filter is complete. A black frame, side shields and scratch-resistant Hardcoat finish support use in metalworking environments where Shade 3 is appropriate.
Key Features
- Flip-up filter: Moves between shaded and clear viewing.
- Clear base lens: Remains in position when the filter is raised.
- Side shields: Add coverage against flying particles.
- Hardcoat: Helps resist scratching during normal use.
Common Applications
- Torch soldering where Shade 3 is appropriate.
- Selected light oxygen-cutting tasks after shade assessment.
- Metalworking inspection between filtered-light tasks.
- Industrial maintenance requiring Shade 3 eyewear.
Choose the Filter for the Process
Shade 3 is a specific filter level, not general protection for every welding or cutting operation. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.133(a)(5) lists a minimum Shade 2 for torch soldering and Shade 3 for light oxygen cutting below one inch of plate thickness. Torch brazing requires at least Shade 3. Gas welding requires higher shades, starting at Shade 4 for light work.
Select the filter from the actual process and exposure. These Shade 3 glasses are not a substitute for the welding helmet, face coverage and higher filter shade needed for arc welding. Keep the filter lowered whenever its protection is required; raising it removes the Shade 3 filtering from your view.
Safety Standards and Limitations
The manufacturer specification sheet lists ANSI Z87+ high-impact performance. OSHA requires employers to select suitable eye and face protection, including side protection where flying objects are present. OSHA does not approve individual safety glasses.
Use additional face protection when the hazard assessment requires it. This spectacle design does not seal against dust or chemical splash. Hardcoat is a scratch-resistant finish; it does not establish anti-fog performance. Inspect the frame, hinges and lenses before use and replace damaged eyewear.

FAQ
- Does the filter darken automatically? No. S212 has a fixed Shade 3 filter that you manually flip up or down.
- Can I order replacement lenses? The manufacturer sheet lists replacement lenses as unavailable. Do not substitute unapproved lenses.
- Does raising the filter remove the clear lens? No. The clear base lens remains in place, but it does not provide the Shade 3 filtering.
