Texas Oilfield PPE Checklist for Safer Crews

A Texas oilfield PPE checklist should start with the work being performed, not with a standard supply-room issue list. A drilling crew handling pipe, a lease operator collecting samples, and a technician servicing pressure equipment may work at the same location while facing different impact, chemical, noise, respiratory, heat, and fall hazards.

Use this checklist as a pre-mobilization and procurement tool. It does not replace the employer's written hazard assessment, job safety analysis, site rules, exposure monitoring, or emergency response plan. Under 29 CFR 1910.132, employers must assess workplace hazards, select PPE that protects against those hazards, ensure it properly fits each affected employee, and train workers to use it.

Start With a Job and Site Hazard Review

Before selecting products, document the task, work area, expected duration, crew roles, equipment, materials, weather, and emergency conditions. OSHA notes that oil and gas companies commonly use a job safety analysis or job hazard analysis to identify hazards and controls.

Review whether the work involves:

  • Moving vehicles, suspended loads, pipe handling, or dropped objects
  • Sharp edges, pinch points, high-pressure lines, or rotating equipment
  • Chemical splash, skin contact, flammable vapor, or hot work
  • Hydrogen sulfide, silica, welding fume, dust, or other airborne hazards
  • High noise from pumps, compressors, generators, or impact tools
  • Elevated work on tanks, platforms, derricks, ladders, or trucks
  • Texas heat, sun, storms, mud, wet grating, or changing wind direction
  • Site-specific operator, contractor, or customer requirements

PPE is one part of the control plan. Elimination, substitution, engineering controls, and safe work practices should be considered before relying on PPE alone.

Texas Oilfield PPE Checklist by Protection Category

Head Protection

Select a hard hat or safety helmet for the identified impact and electrical hazards. Confirm the applicable ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 type and class, suspension, fit, chin-strap requirements, and compatibility with mounted hearing or face protection. Class C head protection does not provide electrical insulation.

Inspect the shell and suspension before use. Remove equipment from service after an impact or when it shows cracks, deformation, chemical damage, UV degradation, or other conditions identified by the manufacturer. Do not drill the shell or add unapproved accessories.

Eye and Face Protection

OSHA requires appropriate eye or face protection for hazards such as flying particles, liquid chemicals, chemical vapors, and potentially harmful light radiation. Where flying-object hazards are present, eye protection must include side protection.

Match the protector to the task:

  • Impact-rated safety glasses with side protection for relevant flying-particle hazards
  • Goggles designed for dust or chemical splash when the exposure requires a closer seal
  • A face shield over primary eye protection for severe impact or splash exposure
  • Correctly shaded and marked protection for welding, cutting, or other radiant-energy work

Tinted lenses can help with outdoor glare, but ordinary tinted safety lenses are not welding filters. Workers who wear prescription glasses need prescription safety eyewear or over-the-glasses protection that does not disturb either lens position.

Hearing Protection

Do not select hearing protection from equipment noise assumptions alone. Use workplace noise measurements and the hearing conservation program to determine where protection is required and what attenuation is appropriate.

Earplugs may suit high-volume issue stations and workers who also wear head protection. Earmuffs can be easier to remove and replace during intermittent exposure, but they must seal correctly around eyewear, hair, and other PPE. Train workers on fit because the package Noise Reduction Rating is a laboratory value, not a guarantee of workplace attenuation.

Flame-Resistant Clothing and High-Visibility Apparel

Where the hazard assessment identifies flash-fire exposure, select flame-resistant clothing for the hazard and confirm the site-required standard, garment certification, sizing, and layering instructions. NFPA 2112 may apply to garments designed to protect industrial personnel from short-duration thermal exposure from fire, but the employer must determine the requirements for the work.

Follow the garment manufacturer's instructions for base layers, laundering, repairs, retirement, and contamination. Do not assume that any garment labeled FR is suitable for every flash-fire, arc-flash, or chemical hazard.

High visibility is a separate protective function. If crews also work around traffic or mobile equipment, determine whether ANSI/ISEA 107-compliant apparel is required. When flash-fire and visibility hazards overlap, use garments or an approved system that addresses both requirements instead of placing ordinary melting-fabric apparel over FR clothing.

Hand Protection

OSHA 1910.138 requires employers to base hand-protection selection on the glove's performance relative to the task, conditions, duration, and identified hazards. One glove rarely covers every oilfield task.

Evaluate:

  • Grip, abrasion, impact, and dexterity for pipe and material handling
  • Verified cut resistance for sharp edges and burrs
  • Chemical permeation and degradation data for the exact substance, concentration, temperature, and contact time
  • Thermal performance for hot or cold surfaces
  • Properly rated insulating gloves and leather protectors for applicable electrical work

Keep separate approved glove options for mechanical, chemical, electrical, and thermal tasks. Inspect gloves before use and replace pairs with tears, hardening, contamination, loss of grip, or other damage that can affect protection.

Foot Protection

Select protective footwear for the actual impact, compression, puncture, electrical, slip, and chemical hazards. An ASTM-rated safety toe addresses only part of the decision.

Consider outsole condition and traction on mud, oil, wet grating, lease roads, and ladders; boot height for liquids and mud; puncture protection where sharp debris is present; and whether chemical-resistant footwear is needed. No outsole is slip-proof on every contaminant or surface, so housekeeping and walking practices remain important controls.

Respiratory Protection and Hydrogen Sulfide

Hydrogen sulfide is a recognized oil and gas hazard, but cartridge selection must never be based on odor or a generic oilfield list. Employers must identify contaminants, estimate exposures, and select NIOSH-approved respirators under a written respiratory protection program when respirators are required.

The program may include medical evaluation, fit testing for tight-fitting respirators, training, inspection, cleaning, storage, and an objective cartridge change schedule. Facial hair cannot interfere with a tight-fitting respirator's sealing surface.

Unknown concentrations and oxygen-deficient or potentially IDLH atmospheres require the atmosphere-supplying respiratory protection specified by OSHA 1910.134, not an air-purifying respirator. OSHA also emphasizes active hydrogen-sulfide monitoring, planning, and worker training for oil and gas operations.

For non-IDLH, identified hazards, compare respirator cartridges and filters only after the respirator program determines the correct contaminant protection and compatibility.

Fall Protection and Rescue Readiness

Elevated work can involve tanks, platforms, derricks, ladders, trucks, and temporary structures. Where fall hazards are not eliminated or controlled by other means, select a complete and compatible fall-protection system for the task.

A harness alone is not a system. Review the harness, connector, anchorage, clearance, swing-fall exposure, equipment compatibility, inspection criteria, and prompt-rescue plan. Remove damaged or fall-arrested equipment from service according to the applicable standard and manufacturer's instructions.

Add Heat Stress to the PPE Decision

Texas heat can change how a protective system performs in practice. Heavy garments, chemical protection, respirators, and other PPE can increase heat burden. Heat can also contribute to fogged eyewear, sweaty hands, reduced grip, fatigue, and poor fit.

Evaluate work-rest practices, hydration, acclimatization, shade or cooling areas, workload, weather, and PPE burden as part of the site heat-illness prevention plan. Do not remove required PPE to solve a heat problem; adjust the work plan and controls under the direction of the employer's safety program.

Pre-Mobilization PPE Procurement Check

Before the crew travels, confirm:

  • The hazard assessment and JSA cover the scheduled work
  • Approved PPE models, standards, and limitations are documented
  • Every worker has the correct size and can wear required items together
  • Prescription eyewear, facial-hair, and medical-evaluation needs are resolved
  • Replacement parts, consumables, and spare sizes are stocked
  • Specialty chemical, respiratory, electrical, and fall equipment is task-approved
  • Inspection, cleaning, storage, and retirement rules are understood
  • Contractor requirements match the operator's site rules
  • Emergency and rescue equipment is available and personnel are trained

For multi-site operations, standardize products where hazards and tasks are genuinely comparable. Preserve approved alternatives for worker fit, hand size, prescription eyewear, women-specific sizing, and task-specific dexterity.
