NRR is a laboratory-derived rating shown on U.S. hearing-protector packaging. It is useful for comparing products, but it does not equal the protection every individual worker receives. Ear-canal shape, insertion depth, earmuff cushion seal, eyewear temples, hair, headwear, movement, condition, training, and wear time can change real-world attenuation.

NIOSH now recommends individual quantitative fit testing for hearing protection devices. A fit test produces a Personal Attenuation Rating for a specific worker wearing a specific protector and helps identify inadequate fit, excessive attenuation, and training needs.
