Particulate filters help reduce exposure to specified particles, while gas and vapor cartridges use approved media for designated contaminants. Combination products provide both functions within the specific NIOSH-approved configuration. Match the exact cartridge or filter to the contaminant, concentration, facepiece brand, respirator series, and manufacturer approval label.
Do not mix components from different respirator manufacturers or substitute unapproved parts. Gas and vapor cartridges require an OSHA-compliant change schedule or an appropriate end-of-service-life indicator; odor or taste must not be the primary replacement method. Air-purifying respirators are not for oxygen-deficient or IDLH atmospheres. Use respiratory protection within a complete workplace program under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134.
